Dollco Printing Takes Home Gold at the Environmental Printing Awards
Ottawa, ON Canada (Feb 19, 2009) – Dollco Printing is pleased to announce it was awarded Gold at the fourth annual Environmental Printing Awards held at the Eglinton Grand Banquet Hall in Toronto on February 12, 2009. Dollco won Gold in the category "Most Progressive Environmental Printing project, web offset" for their printing of Canadian Geographic’s environmental issue on the wheat sheet.
There were 350 industry professionals in attendance at the prestigious event put on by Print Action Magazine and hosted by local Canadian celebrities Linden MacIntrye, a broadcast journalist and co-host of the CBC news program The Fifth Estate and Keynote speaker Tzeporah Berman, co-founder of ForestEthics. Both MacIntrye and Berman presented 25 different awards to technology vendors and printers from across Canada.
“We are very honored to receive a Gold Award for the "Most Progressive Environmental Printing project” in the web offset category,” said Kevin Nicholds, President of Dollco Printing. “Everyone at Dollco works hard to provide a high level of quality for our clients and with the rise in environmental concerns; we strive to offer continuous improvements in this area of print production.”
Dollco Printing is the first in North America to print a magazine on paper made from wheat straw waste, comprised of 20% wheat straw, 40% post-consumer recycled fibre and 40% totally chlorine free virgin wood fibre. A new age approach to environmental conservation, the wheat sheet prints like any publication stock and has proven that agriculturally-based pulps can produce desirable results.
This year the categories were expanded to cover more environmental efforts employed in the industry today. Of the 16 categories, entries were judged on special production methods and successful use of new techniques and environmental benefits in materials, equipment and procedures.
Krista Nicholds, co-owner of Dollco commented, “Our team is strongly committed to sustainable printing practices and our success is related to employee engagement and the investment in viable alternatives. We’ve also built solid partnerships with organizations such as Markets Initiatives and TerraChoice to ensure our company reduces environmental impact.”
Dollco Printing fully supports the use of agricultural by-products for the production of pulp and is quickly becoming a recognized forerunner in the publishing industry for adopting technological advances and effective processes in eco-friendly print production. Partner Nicole Rycroft, executive director of Markets Initiative also won the “Environmental Innovator” award for her work on this project, and it’s thanks to long term customers such as Canadian Geographic and their leading edge publication that this recognition could be possible.
